The Preferment curriculum: six modules for life after a career

Last updated:

The Preferment course from Rarified Life has six modules: Introduction, Identity, Motivation, Alignment, Accountability, and Launch, taught across eight weekly live sessions.

The modules run in a set order because each one depends on the last. You cannot align your days with your values until you know who you are without your job, and you cannot launch a mission you have not named. The sessions work through Anne van Leynseele's book chapter by chapter, with homework in the book.

Part of the guide to Rarified Life's life after retirement course and retirement coaching.

What will I learn in the Preferment course?

You will move from understanding where you are now, to separating who you are from what you did, to finding new motivation, matching your values and strengths to your days, building accountability, and finally naming and stepping into a mission for your next chapter.

The six modules, in order

  1. Module 1: Introduction

Where you are right now, and why the old model of retirement was never built for someone like you.

The course opens with an honest look at your starting point. It names the gap many high achievers feel: decades spent building a career and a reputation, and now more time than ever with no clear sense of what it is for.

  2. Module 2: Identity

Separating who you are from what you did for a living.

This is the module for anyone whose sense of self was tied to a title. Rarified Life frames the goal as having a real answer to "So, what do you do?" that does not begin with "I used to."

  3. Module 3: Motivation

Finding what actually moves you, now that a paycheck isn't the reason.

Without salary, promotion, or deadlines, something else has to get you up in the morning. This module looks for the drivers that remain once the external ones are gone.

  4. Module 4: Alignment

Matching your values and strengths to how you'll actually spend your days.

Here the framework turns into a calendar. It connects to two of Preferment's pillars, personal values and meaningful pursuits, and to the book's idea of fulfilling hours instead of filling them.

  5. Module 5: Accountability

Building the structure that turns intention into a lived routine.

Good intentions fade without structure. This module builds the routines and checks that keep new plans alive after the course ends.

  6. Module 6: Launch

Naming your mission for this next chapter, and stepping into it.

The final module asks you to put your next chapter into words as a mission, then begin living it.

How do six modules fit into eight weeks?

Rarified Life lists eight weekly live sessions and six modules but does not publish a week-by-week map between the two. What it does say: the sessions follow the book chapter by chapter, each week builds on the last, and homework is done between sessions. Confirm the current pacing on the Preferment course page summary and at rarifiedlife.com.
